Morning Reflections - A Reflected Portrait in a Kettle

Morning Reflections

What I Drew

I guess this is more of a portrait then a still life. But everything was very still. It is a reflection of me in my studio apartment. I don't know if this qualifies for this entry due to subject and date.

How I Did It

I sat at the kitchen counter and made a few rough sketches. Then I went back to my drawing table and ironed out any problems in relation to perspective, detail, and highlights. Finally, I traced the final sketch with all the corrections onto a new piece of drawing paper, courtesy of a light box. I went back to the kitchen area and finished the drawing.

It took me two days to complete this because I had to wait until the sunlight was just right. I used mechanical graphite pencils on Bristol board.

Tips and Tricks

  • A light box has saved me many hours, paper, and frustration. I recommend it for everyone. Also pay attention to your light source. I had to wait until the sun was streaming through the Western window in order to get the highlights correct.
