Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain - Betty Edwards

About.com Rating threehalf out of Five

By Helen South, About.com

The Bottom Line

For artists interested in the process of drawing, and especially teachers, Betty Edwards' book is an interesting read. Beginners who are learning to draw, especially if you enjoy reading and are interested in the 'how and why' behind the process of drawing, will also find it worthwhile. However some people, especially those who do not enjoy reading, any readers do find the text too 'in depth'. If you want more hands-on and less philosophy, you might be better served by a different book.
Pros
  • focuses on the importance of 'seeing'
  • many useful and varied illustrations
Cons
  • the text can be very wordy
  • overemphasises the right-brain concept

Guide Review - Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain - Betty Edwards

Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain is based on the premise that the left and right hemispheres of the brain process information in very different ways. The first chapters of Drawing on the Right Side are largely devoted to explaining the left/right model, and explaining its relevance to drawing. The stages of development in children's drawing are explored, and the impact of the persistence of the childish symbol-system discussed.

Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain includes many drawing exercises, including 'upside down drawing', 'blind contour' and 'modified contour' drawing. Edwards also explains negative space drawing, drawing perspective from life, portrait drawing, and light and shadow.

The New Revised Edition of 'Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain' includes additional illustrations, changes to some material through the book, as well as some useful ideas added since the original book was written. The new edition also includes some material on color.

Many of Edward's ideas have now become 'mainstream', so you'll find that this text has influenced many more recent publications. The original book (or its new edition) is still well worth reading.
