About.com's GoEurope Guide, James Martin, took this lovely photo of Vinyards at Cordero di Montezemolo. In the foreground are budding Nebbiolo grapes, which are an indigenous red grape variety with fast-growing vines and deep roots suitaed to dry farming.
The photo is a great example of atmospheric perspective - in this case, largely created in the camera lens by using a shorter depth of field that throws the background out of focus. It helps to organise the scene, making the foreground crisp clear while the distance is soft and hazy. You can create the effect in drawing, whether from a photo or from life by lightly handling the background and reducing contrast, while making your foreground well-defined, emphasising detail and making use of contrast so that it seems to come forward in space.
