Shading the Sketch
I'm using my drawing tablet to draw this dog, rather inexpertly. With pencil, I'd probably have much smoother shading on the right, shadowed side before adding texture. But this is going quite well. I've left the construction lines dark here, but normally I'd start erasing them as I go. Notice that I'm working across the whole surface, looking for the darkest areas and shading them, line direction going aroundthe dog's muzzle to create a three-dimensional effect. You can also see how I've drawn backwards towards the white fur of the chest to create that texture that I mentioned previously. Where the dog's fur is shorter, I've shaded very softly to minimize texture.
