Shading the Sketch
Now the shading of the sketch is developed. With pencil, you can do much more subtle shading; with the basic table, this shading is quite coarse, so will be softened with the eraser tool. I've left the construction lines dark here so you can see where the drawing is being worked, but normally I'd start erasing them as I go. Notice that I'm working across the whole surface, looking for the darkest areas and shading them, line direction going aroundthe dog's muzzle to create a three-dimensional effect. You can also see how I've drawn backwards towards the white fur of the chest to create that texture that I mentioned in the previous step. Where the dog's fur is shorter, I've shaded very softly to minimize texture.
