A clear reference photo

First you'll need a reference photo. Red roses are a popular choice, but lighter colors allow you to see shadows more easily. A large, crisp photo allows me to zoom in. There's nothing better than taking your own photos - you can choose the perfect bloom, control the composition and lighting.

In most paint programs, when you open an image, it is the 'canvas' and you can't manipulate it. So, start by 'selecting all' and pasting the image as a new layer. That allows you to reduce opacity and later delete the reference image. I usually reduce the opacity of the reference image so it is 'barely there', just acting as a guide - this helps keep your line more fluid.
