Describing volume and gravity

This more developed structural drawing has the figure much more securely anchored, with the placement of feet, head and center axis alignment working well to convey a logical center of gravity.

The awareness of three-dimensional space is described with cross-contour and shading, creating a sense of volume in the simplified forms. Then detail is developed, with the placement of major muscle masses on the torso and limbs. Contours are refined to follow the surface anatomy more precisely. Skeletal surface details - bones of the ankle, elbow, hips and shoulders - are important landmarks on the figure.
