Sketchbook Paper - Graphite Pencil Test

Testing pencil shading on generic sketch paper.

In this section of the test, I tried side-shading with a soft pencil (left) and point-shading with a hard and soft pencil (right).

Side-shading with a soft pencil on generic sketch paper makes its grain very noticeable, with uneven white pits showing through the graphite. The effect was less reduced with point shading, but still obvious.

Point shading with a harder pencil produced the most even result (center). Both hard and soft pencils produced a good crisp line, slightly depressing the surface.

This surface would be suitable for casual sketching where areas of solid or delicate tone are not required, and more linear styles of drawing such as contour drawing and crosshatching.
