Carbon Black

From Helen South's Drawing/Sketching Glossary, for About.com

Definition: Carbon black is an inorganic, synthetic black pigment produced by the partial burning of hydrocarbons, and the term is used to refer to any of several similar black pigments including pure carbon black, lamp black and ivory black.

Pure carbon black, or Pigment Black 7, is produced from the partial combustion of natural gas. It gives a velvety black but does not tend to mix well.

Also Known As: pure carbon black, lamp black, noir de carbone, ivory black
