Balance - What is Balance?

From Helen South's Drawing/Sketching Glossary, for About.com

Definition: Balance is dependent upon the positioning and weight of line and tone within the composition. Dense, heavy tone carries more visual 'weight' than a light tone. An energetically drawn area likewise draws the eye more than a delicate one, and strong contrast has more impact than low contrast.

Balance is not the same as symmetry, but works on the desire for symmetry and the way the viewer observes a visual field to create an analogous sensation, but with varied elements.

For example, an angled line may counteract the natural downwards fall of the gaze. A large, light square will effectively balance a small, dense circular shape. In practice, this may take the form of two bowls placed a certain way in a still-life, or the use of a window-sill to cut across a composition.
