The body type works for both male and female characters because it illustrates a character that is not physically mature. Simple things indicate which character is male and which is female: Color of Clothing, Hairstyle, Eyelashes, and optionally, Lips for females.

You can try adding accessories too like earrings, but I chose not to because I wanted to be SURE the viewer would know this girl is a very young child.
