Drawing/Sketching readers are doing some amazing portraiture - from incredibly lifelike, finely detailed work to more emotional explorations of human expression. Portraiture can be incredibly challenging, as the slightest mark can make such a difference to the likeness, but it is also remarkably rewarding.

2. Portraits of Children

Children are such difficult subjects, with their fine skin and delicate features offering the artist a real challenge. Our Drawing/Sketching readers and forum members have done some really beautiful portrait drawings of babies and children. You'll find work from beginners and experts, each one demonstrating the artist's unique view of their subject.

3. Bollywood Star Portraits

M Agarwal, licensed to About.com, Inc.
Bollywood is the home of some of the most beautiful and talented film stars in the world. Aishwarya Rai, Hrithik Roshan, Shahrukh Khan and Kareena Kapoor are among the subjects of these portrait drawings.

4. Celebrity Portraits

Sometimes celebrity drawings are a kind of 'fan art', drawn in homage to our celebrity idols. But often they are caught in character or at a particular moment that expresses something more universal. Their images become iconic, as in this portrait of Hendrix drawn by Lulu Pelletier.

5. Figure Drawing

Paz Winshtein, licensed to About.com, Inc.
Many nude figure drawings focus on the beauty or interesting aesthetic qualities of the model, but the unadorned human figure also allows comment on the human condition, 'as naked as the day we were born', without the status or cultural associations that clothing can carry.

6. Animal Portraits

Lulu Pelletier, licensed to About.com, Inc.
Cats, dogs and horses are all favorite subjects, as are beautiful wild animals. Drawing animals offers many challenges for the artist. Shiny eyes, rough or glossy fur and hair all pose interesting problems, as does complex anatomy.

7. Landscape and Architecture

This broad topic includes landscape, seascape, architectural and perspective drawings. The possibilities offered by landscape drawing are endless; from a macro-view to a broad vista, from the wilderness to the urban jungle.

8. Still Life and Studies

Linda Weil, licensed to About.com, Inc.
Artists create still life drawings both as studies or exercises and as finished, complete artworks. The still life subject allows the artist to control their composition by arranging objects and lighting. They can choose meaningful objects and arrangements for their still life composition, and maximize the use of light and shade for interesting and expressive drawing.

9. Dragons and Fantasy

D. Loftus, licensed to About.com, Inc.
Fantasy artists rely heavily on drawing and sketching to bring their ideas to life. Fantasy drawing is a wonderful way to explore your imagination and feelings, without worrying about the 'rules' of real life - you can create your own world with its own rules, or draw your own vision of a favorite story.

10. Figurative Compositions

Paz Winshtein, licensed to About.com, Inc.
Figurative compositions focus on figurative drawing, with the human figure a key element in the composition. People on their own or in environments, they tend to be at more of a 'distance' than the traditional portrait drawing, though they often pack as much - if not more - emotional punch.

11. Cartoons, Comics and Manga

M Takacs, licensed to About.com
Comic artists, even when using technology to speed their production, still rely heavily on old-fashioned drawing, and you'll find some of the best draughtspeople sketching for comic books in their many forms.

12. Abstract and Decorative Art
