The nude figure has always featured strongly in any artist's training, largely due to the focus on the classical nude in art. In recent years this interest has declined, but the nude continues to be a challenging and fascinating subject. The technical challenges of life or figure drawing - proportion, foreshortening, form, line and tone - are considerable, but the interpretation is perhaps more so. While many nude figure drawings focus on the beauty or interesting aesthetic qualities of the model's form, the unadorned human figure also allows comment on the human condition, 'as naked as the day we were born' and so without the status or cultural associations that clothing can carry.
