Saranya writes: Initially, I had no idea about proportions in a face, and I found it very difficult to draw one. Later, with the help of online tutorials, I learnt the rules. Still, I haven't been able to use them properly, and that's why, I think, my sketches never look like the photos I've tried to copy. I've never got the face-tilt right. But the fact that they resemble human face is solely because of the tutorials. In the original photo, the model had streaked her hair, and I didn't know how to bring it out. A small portion of her ear was also visible, but I covered it with the her hair.

Helen's Comment: This is very nice, Saranya, and you are doing well with the proportions. Take a look at my How to Draw Hair tutorial, making sure you click through to the pages on long hair. You might need a softer pencil for the darks.

The trick with drawing faces is to stop thinking so hard about it. You aren't drawing a chin, you are drawing a line. Look at the shape of the line, and match it. When you start thinking about what you are drawing, then what you know messes up what you see. Later, you can go back to thinking about anatomy and stuff, but for now, you have to learn to trust your eyes. You are doing really well though, keep practicing.
