Fiona writes:This sketch was intended only as a practise at drawing eyes. I ended up continuing with the sketch moving outward from the eyes until I had filled the whole paper (hence the reason why it doesn't really fit)! I then copied it onto larger paper for the person in the portrait which was a lot clearer.
The sketch was copied from an old black and white photo and the medium was graphite pencil and charcoal. This was my second attempt at portrait drawing.

Helen's Comment:Only your second attempt?! This is very well done. You've done well with the beard - always really difficult - and got good texture in the hair. I think in this case you're still drawing 'hairs' a bit rather than the 'highlights and shadows' - but curly hair is especially difficult as it is so complex. I know you've read my How to Draw Hair tutorial since you drew this. Try to choose photos with more angled lighting, to make the face and nose easier to model.
