Medium: Graphite Pencil

Artist's Statement: 'I have been drawing for about 8 months. I have taken 5 weeks of drawing class. I depend on books. I draw my daughters and I found this to be hard as there were 3 of them. I drew this with a 4H pencil. '
Guide Comment: You're making great progress for a self-taught beginner. You've got the features aligned correctly and seem to have observed the detail in the eyes well. You've really captured their sunny smiles!

A suggestion to help you improve: A 4H is way too hard for most drawing - I might use one for shading in some skintones, but you really need to use much softer pencils to get a full range of value. Drawing too light is a big problem for beginners. Once you have got the main structure of your drawing done, look for the darkest areas - shadows, pupils of the eyes (being careful to reserve reflections and highlights!) and especially in folds and creases - and draw them in really dark. Use a 4B pencil, brightening the point on a scrap of paper if it gets blunt. Once you've got some darks established, you'll find it much easier to use a full range of tonal value in your drawing.
