Art Gallery - Pencil Drawing
Student © Thaddeus Carl 2004

pencil drawing

Medium: Graphite Pencil 4x5 Inches

Artist's Statement: 'I normally draw faces, but I can also draw landscapes and sometimes figures as well. I chose pencil because, I can add more details and work better than with charcoal or pastels. I have been drawing for a couple years but, only now have I begun to really pick up the pace. I chose this piece because it has good expression and it is a little more unusual than other pieces I have created.'
Guide Comment: While the artist chose to title this piece 'student' the filename on the picture was 'scream', and while I think the expression of the subject is certainly pained, at first I thought he might be singing. There is always a bit of a struggle between realism and expression in art, and I feel in this case perhaps a little more freedom in the drawing - more expressive lines and stronger contrast, and perhaps creative use of composition - might have helped to express the feeling better. However, you've done well to draw a difficult expression - the modeling of the nose is particularly well done - and you've observed the highlights and shadows in the folds of the clothes. Good stuff!
