Medium: Charcoal
| Artist Statement: Self taught artist who fell in love with charcoal after initially trying watercolors. I call the style "smeared reality". Not really asking for anything from the readers; just wanted to share and receive any critiques readers care to submit. |
| Guide Comment: This drawing of these rather wistful-looking little dogs shows excellent use of the properties of charcoal. Rich darks are blended out to soft, smoky mid-values. It seems well suited to the fur texture. I suspect the original has a little more contrast - the white of the paper often looks darker in photos - which would give it more zing. I'm not sure about the pink ears - I feel the color is a little superfluous. Perhaps it would work better if you had a touch of color elsewhere in the image, such as part of a collar or some other detail. |
