| Artist's Statement: 'This is a piece I did from a photo, the day before assessment for school, in a hurry (twenty five minutes)...but I still like it. It's on some new rough toothed paper that has just come out, which is made specifically for pastels - you can buy the paint and paint it over cartridge, or just buy the paper (which is pretty expensive). It seems to hang on to the pastel pretty well though. I like working over black, and find that when I spray the work with fixative it disappears. .. . I'm awful with colour. I don't generally draw or sketch with colour, and painting (especially mixing) is a major pain for me. But this piece has only five colours in, plus white and black, and works pretty well. It lost something in the photography - I framed it before photographing it and couldnt be bothered ripping it apart to do it again! '

| Guide Comment: This pastel drawing shows good use of the contrasting color background which brings out the warm foreground rusty colors and white. I'd like to see the drawing carried through more so there is a bit less blue showing - colored papers I think look most effective when used as a subtle unifying factor (hints showing through here and there) rather than broad areas. I like the way you've kept the marks clean and fresh, without blending. This gives the drawing a great deal of vitality.
