Daddy's Girl and Mikayla © C Linville 2004
|
Medium: Graphite Pencil
| Artist's Statement: 'I sketched the first picture from a photo of my little girl taken when she was about two years old (she's now eight). I've never been able to successfully master portraits but will probably die trying. This piece was done in a "Zuede Book" journal from Barnes and Noble as I had not intended to complete it, I was simply doodling and didn't stop until this. Next time I will choose a smother paper so as to achieve a less fuzzy finish.
The second drawing is my latest attempt to capture an image from a photograph. I used a selection of graphite pencils. This drawing is a picture of my niece, Mikayla. I feel that my art has improved astonishingly due to your newsletter and the wonderful hints and tips it offers.
Any critique will be very much welcomed. '

| Guide Comment: Thanks for the kind words Chris, I'm glad you find the newsletter helpful. While your second drawing shows a much better finish and detail, your first sketch does have a freshness and immediacy. Beware of over-using a blending stump, as this flattens the graphite into the paper, leaving a dull surface. It does depend on what you are after. Be sure to balance working from photographs with sketching from life to develop your sense of three-dimensional form. You've caught the sparkle in the eyes in your second drawing, and handled the awkward angle particularly well. Great job!
