portrait drawing

Medium: graphite pencil

Artist Statement: I've just taken up drawing as a hobby. Though I've doodled all my life, I've only been really drawing for a little while. I really like the Renaissance art and that is the type of art that inspires me most. I strive for that emotional realism. I started copying art from various Renaissance artists, but this is my first piece that I can call my own. I would greatly appreciate any feedback, bad with good.
Guide Comment: This is a tricky piece to critique, as I'm not altogether sure what you are aiming for, since you mentioned studying Renaissance artists, but striving for emotional realism - two approaches which normally one would consider to be at opposite ends of the artistic spectrum. I do feel that highly realist art can in fact have a great deal of emotional power, just as 'expressionist' art can lack feeling. Don't think that you need to throw out accurate observation, or use of a model, in order to be expressive. You also need to make sure that your mark-making conveys what you want it to: if you want power, be sure that your marks look powerful on the page. I needed to boost the contrast in your drawing - perhaps you've used too hard a pencil. You might like to experiment with charcoal or a 6B pencil to get some really strong marks down on the page. This portrait is quite interesting, and a good first effort. I'm wondering what he is staring at!
