Portrait of Susie © L Bissett 2004
Medium: graphite pencil
Artist Statement: Last week I decided to draw a picture of my daughter. I've never done people before so I am pleasantly surprised at how well this turned out and how much it resembles her! Yeah me!
Guide Comment: Isn't it a good feeling when your drawing works out well! You've every right to feel proud too, its well done. You've resisted the temptation to outline - the soft edges help to model the face (crisp lines tend to jump forwards, while a soft edge will merge into the background). You've also used a good range of tonal values, especially in the hair. This is a good example of how important hair is in a portrait drawing, and I particularly like your attention to detail in the hairline. The ear looks like you've found it a bit problematic - perhaps the side of the cheek could be shaded a touch darker, and the ear a touch darker too, which would flatten it back against the hair a little - though given that you're happy with the picture, it might be best not to mess with it at this point!
