Breezy Hills Barn © D Bennett 2003

Medium: Woodless Graphite pencils #HB, #2 and #6B, 8.5 x 11 inches
| Artist's Statement: 'Thank you for the opportunity of posting my work. This is my first serious attempt at an original work of art. I was visiting the barn where my horse resides and was sitting in the back of my pick-up while sketching this piece. Now in my mid- 40's, I am revisiting my childhood love of drawing by taking a correspondence art course and loving it! I would truly appreciate any critique of my work as an opportunity of growth.'
Guide Comment: I'm amazed that this is your first serious work - its very good. I particularly like the pencil texture in the timber front of the barn, and the strong dark interior. You've also done the trees really well - no steel wool squiggles! I'm not so keen on the handling of the grass in the foreground - don't get impatient with grass - if you are going to put it in, it (and the ground around and behind it) needs to be treated with the same attention as the rest of the picture. Overall, its a fine drawing.
