| Guide Comment: This gorgeous portrait drawing shows how effective contoured hatching can be in modelling the form. Its a technique you can see in many old master drawings, where hatching follows the shape of the form and is overlaid at a small angle, creating a moire-like effect (notice the little diamond shapes of light paper between the hatches) which adds visual 'sparkle' even to dark areas. The drawing is a little pale for my liking - I feel a softer pencil, kept sharp, would be good to get the deep, smoky tones of Jennifer Lopez's remarkable eyes. That's a small quibble though. The highlights and reflected light have been well observed and the hair is handled beautifully - enough detail and modelling, without being obsessive. A lovely piece. |
