Medium: pastel
| Artist's Statement: 'HI, well lets see. My favorite artist is Salvator Salgado... I have been drawing for about two years and prefer plain old pencil to any other media.. I feel I have more control over the direction of my art in this form. I draw eastern art mainley as a inspiration to my grandmother who collects all kinds of art from the east. Currentley I am trying to master the human form... Ugh my biggest challenge yet. I am a commercial art student and am learning all the art software I can as well.

| Guide Comment: Pastel is a surprisingly difficult medium. I think a fair bit has been lost in the poto or scan, but I can see that you've tried layering colors to get some texture and form, a good start. You might like to develop this further. The skin tones look a bit gray - I'm not sure if this is because you have a limited palette, or if its the paper. Its important to keep skintones clean. You can do this by sketching in a light color and filling in your skintones first, or, if you want to establish some darks first, try not taking your initial darks right up to the edge, and likewise stop your skintones short of any dark areas, just working up to the edges last of all. Keep your hands and pastels clean when doing light areas. It's also important to use the right paper in pastel drawing, a good textured surface that will hold plenty of pastel, so you get a nice rich layer of color laid down. Don't be afraid of color - you could use touches of green and blue on the face (reflected color from the clothes) and dark contrasting colors in the shadows rather than black.
