Sketching with Color
To create an effect similar to a loose watercolor wash, try roughly sketching in areas of color then adding a relaxed pen drawing over the top.

Colored Pencil Rose
Colored pencil can also be used in a very controlled fashion. A the contrast of a dark-toned background (such as foliage) brings out the color in pale flowers, which can look rather insubstantial and unfinished against white paper. The color of flowers can sometimes seem quite flat. Emphasise any slight variations in color, brightening highlights and deepening shadows.

Colored Pencil Drawing
While you can do very detailed work with pastel, it is particularly effective when used for bold, simple compositions like this one. The petals on the (artificial) subjects were very solid in color, so variations were added to create texture and interest.
