1. 1-2-3 Draw Knights Castles & Dragons: A Step by Step Guide

Freddie Levin - Peel Productions. Like others in the '1-2-3 Draw!' series, Levin uses basic shapes and lines to build the drawings, making these drawings quite achievable for younger artists in the 5-9 age range. Great for those who have a fledgeling interest in Medieval life, with snippets of information about custom and dress here and there.

2. Draw! Medieval Fantasies

Peel Productions. Damon J. Reinagle's simple structures build quickly to detailed drawings, so some prior knowledge of drawing and shading is helpful. Includes basic perspective drawing of castles, and covers parts of armour and saddlery, and use of pattern. The inventive approach to fave themes will be a hit with fantasy fans and imaginative kids approx 9 and up.

3. How To Draw Knights, Kings, Queens and Dragons

by Christopher Hart, Watson-Guptill Pubns. Covering a range of useful things to consider when designing your picture, such as how aspects of the drawing add character, or why things are drawn a certain way, this book is ideal for those keen to 'go it alone'. The drawings tend to be 'stage by stage' rather than 'line by line' but are simple enough to be copied by beginners.

4. Draw Fantasy: Dragons, Centaurs, and Other Mythological Characters

Shari Cohen, Frank Dixon (Illus) Lowell House. This book is a bit more of an investment than some of its competitors, and is currently out of print, so it might take a bit of searching to get hold of a copy. However it covers some favourite themes and will be a sure-fire hit with young teens.

5. How to Draw Fantasy Creatures

Michael Teitelbaum, Ron Zalme (Author), Illus. Ron Zalme (Troll Assoc) This book includes some favourite denizens of magical fantasy, including wizards, goblins, unicorns and mermaids, so it should appeal to fans of this genre.
