Site of the Week: Rate My Drawings

Saturday April 28, 2007
Browsing for examples of drawing emotion, I found a fun site called Rate My Drawings. Drawings are done online so that viewers can watch in (almost) real time as the picture comes to life before their eyes. You can rate other people's works, and of course add your own. It seems to have a pretty lively community and runs themed competitions. Be warned, occasionally members can be pretty scathing in their criticism and some are inappropriate(every online village has its share of idiots). There's all sorts of fun stuff including Manga and Anime, animals, and portraiture.

I liked seeing the drawings evolved from the first marks to finished piece: some artists begin with a linear sketch while others build up areas. Some use lots of pencil-like marks while others use broad shapes and a blend tool to create a painterly effect. So pretty interesting viewing - if you aren't sure how to tackle drawing with graphics software, you might find some useful ideas here.

i found this to be a fun site, but it has corrupt moderators, so if your good at drawing, and they dont like it, theyll jusst give you a series of bans to stop you from drawing. Sadly it was a good site.

Really? Gosh, I’m sorry to hear that. Are you sure there wasn’t any other issues involved, like inappropriate content that is unsuitable for children, or overly political content?

I must disagree with shadowen, who must have some type of personal gripe. It is quite obvious from 10 seconds on the site that drawings as not deleted if they’re not “good enough”. There are thousands of drawings obviously from beginners. RateMyDrawings is one of the friendliest communities I’ve been a member of. Moderators only delete content that is inappropriate or does not follow the site rules. I know I speak on behalf of all the wonderful friends I’ve met through RMD.
P.s. I almost wish shadowen’s comment was removed as it is not backed up with any examples and is a false statement.

I’ve been a regular of RMD now for about one year. I have some experience with people who are rude and difficult in places like the forum and draw chat area but I’m glad to say every issue I’ve witnessed has been handled in a fair and just way. Over-all, the only people who get banned from the site are people who are there to cause trouble and don’t follow the rules. Even so, there is usually a temporary ban as a warning before making it stick. Ya gotta wonder when people complain about being banned.

RMD is not rude, when you ask for real criticisms that is what you get… People are very polite and fair on RMD, and have to say have not seen any drawings deleted do not know what you are talking about???? RMD is a good place to learn how to draw and draw for fun…. been their for a year and I’m staying

it is pretty unfair for me because i draw artworks that are pretty hard to interpret for little kids, so often, id get bad ratings from them with a comment saying they dont understand the picture
