Do you listen while you work?

Friday July 28, 2006
I had a lovely morning tea with a fellow writer yesterday, and the subject of music came up. It turned out that we both play a musical instrument (piano in her case, clarinet and now cello in mine). Neither of us can listen to music when writing, as we always get too involved in it. It can never be just 'background'. When I'm drawing and painting though, I like to have something playing. I think it occupies my mind and stops me from overthinking the drawing. My tastes are pretty broad - running from Bach through Frank Sinatra to Led Zep to Runrig to the Nine Inch Nails. Depends what I'm working on. Do you listen to music while you work? Is it always the same, or do you choose something to fit the piece?

Thanks Helen. I am going to give this a try. I think that music can play an essential part in creativity if it fits the piece.

I’m always listening to something, I have a vast collection and I enjoy listening to King Crimson, XTC, John McLaughlins ‘Devotion’ album is inspirational. Often I’ll listen to whatever is on WFUV radio on the internet. I don’t ever choose a specific album for a given project.

I both play an instrument and listen to music. Music is a source of joy and relaxation to me. And a good motivator of the creative process. I usually listen to my CD collection on a good player. I also tune into a radio station I like when the CDs are too difficult to use. I probably listen to music 1 or 2 hours every day.
