A rich and famous artist?
Saturday December 18, 2004
Last week, I had the chance to catch up with an old friend and teacher, Peter Jacobs. Pete taught me printmaking, particularly lithography, and along with the finer points of technique, I learned respect for the craft of printmaking. Peter is one of those characters who speaks of litho stones and printing presses in the same kind of tones that other men reserve for golf clubs or car engines. He's not famous, as he ought to be, nor rich. But art isn't a commodity for him, so it doesn't seem to matter. It does seem kind of unjust, to me - that a man who produces so much really great art should be unknown, while airhead angst-ridden graduates make millions with their self-indulgent twaddle. Go figure.
