Figure Drawing Exercise - Quick Poses

Wednesday February 15, 2006
Often when figure drawing, we can be daunted by the complexity of the figure, resulting in stiff, awkward drawings. Sometimes we focus on the surface detail, at the expense of the overall proportion. Drawing quick poses is a great way to loosen up, and helps you to look at the whole figure, developing a sense of proportion and movement. Sure, its important to learn to observe carefully and get those tricky bits right, but first try this approach to quick figure sketches to free up and capture the essence of the pose. You can apply the quick-pose idea to drawing other subjects, too. Just look for the essentials, and try to capture it in a few strokes.
