Graphite Pencil FAQ - Choosing and Using Pencils

Need to know what the 'H' and 'B' and those numbers mean? Which one to pick for line drawing, which one for shading? And can you use an eraser, or not? This graphite pencil FAQ has the answers for those frequently asked pencil drawing questions.

Remember that there are no strict rules. That old adage of 'a real artist doesn't use an eraser' is nonsense. That's like saying 'a real musician never plays a wrong note'. Or possibly, that 'a writer never edits their work'. Being creative can mean taking a risk, and making a mistake. It can mean making a decision, then changing your mind. I make a mistake, I'm going to fix it! But erasers are also useful tools in many other ways. You may well find that you prefer to do things differently, or choose different pencils to those that I select. That's fine - it's important to find tools and techniques that fit your personal style. My suggestions offer a place to start, and ideas to try out.
