Tinted Charcoal

I love charcoal drawing, and love subtle colors - so when Starrpoint* mentioned Derwent's Tinted Charcoal range my interest was piqued. They look absolutely gorgeous and I'm curious to see how the colored undertones will work with the dense, velvety black that charcoal usually gives. I've tried the Graphitint tinted graphite pencils, and found them quite interesting but tricky, with the bright undertones being difficult to control with water. I haven't had a chance to get to the art store this week, but I hope to give them a spin soon. I'd love to hear your experience with tinted charcoal if you've tried it. You can check the Derwents out at the Blick affiliate link here - Buy Direct.

I just love the Derwent Graftint pencils and wish I’d purchased the “big” tin instead of the smaller one… I’ve been intrigued to try the colored charcoal, but have yet to purchase any. Perhaps I’ll find some during my next visit to Art Supply Warehouse; and with the fall semester starting next week, I’m sure that visit will be sooner than later. Please post more on the subject when you finally get some!

Isn’t it frustrating when you think, ‘oh I’ll just get a few to test…’ – and often these things last really well, too!

I’m really hesitant about the coloured charcoal as I always think so much in terms of charcoal as a ‘monochrome’ so I’m not sure how I’ll adapt to it. I know a lot of artists use a blend of monochrome (ink, graphite or charcoal) plus colored mediums (watercolour, coloured pencil, chalk) very successfully.

I am getting used to them, but you do need to work, learn to control, which is tricky. I have found layering works well, and I prefer them for more muted subjects, like my sparrow drawings than thing where I want vibrant color.

Very good for landscapes, and if you apply water to only certain section, the effects can be quite dramatic.

I’m glad i signed up to your articles they are very easy to follow.
I hold the lead in an unorthodox way, with all fingers but, i was able to score well in class some years back. I was looking for a little hobbie for recreation.
I will save the article about the dog but i’ll try in black and white though.

Thank you very much

Best Regards

Learnertt
