Graphite Pencil FAQ - Choosing and Using Pencils

Saturday March 1, 2008
Need to know what the 'H' and 'B' and those numbers mean? Which one to pick for line drawing, which one for shading? And can you use an eraser, or not? This graphite pencil FAQ has the answers for those frequently asked pencil drawing questions.

Remember that there are no strict rules. That old adage of 'a real artist doesn't use an eraser' is nonsense. That's like saying 'a real musician never plays a wrong note'. Or, 'a real baseball pro always hits home runs'. Erasers are really useful tools, for all kinds of effects, and if I make a mistake, I'm going to fix it! You may well find that you prefer to do things differently, or choose different pencils to those that I select. That's fine - it's important to find tools and techniques that fit your personal style. My suggestions offer a place to start, and ideas to try out.
