Old Master Drawings
Sunday December 23, 2007
You can learn a great deal about old master drawing techniques by simply studying their work. Browse through some of these galleries of Old Master drawings, and consider the medium they used - silverpoint, pencil, ink or chalk - and the type of mark that it produces. Look at the use of hatching, especially contoured hatching, to create form, and note subtleties like broken-line hatching to create lighter values, and 'veiling' - ultra-light shading with chalk or charcoal. Note the direction of light and type of light source the artist might have used.
