Stay Creative in the Holidays

Saturday December 22, 2007
Drawing is one of those activities that, like music, benefits from regular practice. Keep in the sketchbook habit during these holidays by printing out some great Sketchbook Ideas and Project Starters. Tuck them inside your sketchbook so you'll never be stuck for inspiration.

You can do some drawing exercises during the TV advert breaks. Two simple ones are Newspaper Shading, and Blind Contour Drawing. Or have a go at drawing your family or friends. First have a look at theStructure of the Human Head and Drawing the Head from Life. Nobody will sit still for you? Don't worry. Just practice Drawing Hands. Your own hand, that is.

There are plenty of opportunities for interesting subjects in the holidays. What about capturing all the reflections in those shiny Christmas tree baubles? Or drawing snow. Now there's a challenge.
Take care and have a safe and happy holiday!

Thanks for this article Helen. Sometimes I have creative block and forget the variety of subject matter around me but I am building up solid motivation and improving my drawing all the time. As you say it’s regular practice that is so important.
Merry Christmas and a happy new year!

Hi Barry, and thanks (belatedly!) for the good wishes. I did have a lovely Christmas with my family, and hope you did too.

I’ve been trying to put some of my own advice into practice, and have started sketching a bit more. We have beautiful summer weather here, and long, bright evenings.
