Contemporary Calligraphic Art of Lampo Leong
Sunday December 16, 2007
Lampo Leong is a contemporary Chinese-born artist currently teaching in the USA. He makes full use of the expressive possibilities of his native language, but has a sense of grandeur and expansiveness in is work - so it was interesting to read his artist's statement references to Anselm Kiefer, abstract expressionism and the dual artistic heritage that he draws upon. His work is fascinating, full of energetic and organic mark-making that seems to blur the boundary between text and drawing - I wish I understood the Chinese language and could better understand the content, but the expressive power is tangible nonetheless.

He teaches at my school! I’ve never had him as a teacher, but I always see him walking around the hallways and whatnot. It’s strange to have such a well known artist teaching there, but it’s cool, too!
That’s terrific, Tara. Having respected artists at your institution is a winner on many levels, even if you don’t have the chance to learn from them personally. Quality staff attract other quality staff, and often invite their colleagues as guest lecturers. They can really enhance the reputation of your department and so the quality of your degree, which is important if you are entering the employment market.
That can have a roll-on effect as quality students want to be there – and you get to work alongside talented people who are serious about their art.
But of course, it certainly is cool to have someone famous strolling about your corridors!
