Travel Sketches
Sunday November 18, 2007
Are you traveling this holiday season? Don't forget to take a travel sketch kit to take advantage of those quiet moments. Spending time observing and recording helps fix a memory in your mind in a way that the camera can't - but do take reference photos too, so you can complete sketches if you don't get time to finish them.

It takes a little while to get to know a place and to see the particular objects or scene that make for a worthwhile drawing, I think.
That’s an interesting thought, Barry – I guess drawing works in different ways for different people. For me, sketching is a way of ‘thinking’ about things, exploring them and understanding the spatial relationships – though whether the resulting drawing is worthwhile as a piece of art in itself is perhaps debatable!
I find it interesting when an artist continually returns to the same subject, and you can see how their response to it develops over time.
