Brick Wall in Pen, Ink and Wash
Friday August 24, 2007
Here's a short tutorial on drawing a brick wall in pen and wash. Well it is a bit more than just a wall - there's a bit of a building behind it and some low shrubs...well, you get the idea. If you aren't sure about how to approach an architectural subject in pen and ink, this should get you started. A quick tip: you can get away with regular sketch paper for an ink wash, if you don't overload the brush, and work quickly. (ok, and you don't mind a little bit of buckling.) You need to protect the paper underneath and make sure the page is dry before you close your sketchbook. I do ink sketches on cheap office paper quite a bit, it works fine for practice - in fact it tends to bleed less than absorbent sketchbook paper does. However, if you want to do something frame-worthy, go for a watercolour paper and stretch it first.

Helen – Thank you SO MUCH for the time you take to do your demos and the explanations that go along with them. They are very helpful to me and I do appreciate your work. Helen Scott
my pleasure, Helen! I enjoyed working on this tutorial, and hope to follow it up with some more on architectural features soon. Timber-clad houses and tile roofs!
