Doodle Interpretation

Monday August 6, 2007
I did a radio interview last year about doodling, which was fun, though I was frustrated by the interviewer - she seemed obsessed with the idea that doodles revealed hidden artistic genius, and didn't want to talk about much else. I do agree with her up to a point - you can certainly discover hidden talent in a doodle; but I think this is because most people have a lot of repressed creativity within them, not that there are undiscovered Picassos waiting to be discovered. Assessing your doodles has a bit of a catch-22 - as soon as you realize the mean something, that self-consciousness influences them, so they are a less accurate representation of your inner state. The best doodles to analyze are true doodles, done when the mind is otherwise occupied. So go dig out those old math workbooks and check the margins of your telephone book!
