Site of the Week: Draw Steampunk
Friday May 25, 2007
I'm currently listening to the moody and lyrical Steampunk band, Abney Park. (Check out their 'vault' and youtube.com for clips). Steampunk seems to be regarded as a subgenre of Gothic but I tend to feel that it has a quite different aesthetic - I'd say its more of a parallel genre. Victorian brown and cream replaces black and purple, and the spirit is one of invention and exploration rather than ennui and expiration. Think Jules Verne and H.G. Wells. Steampunk creative anachronism gives rise to brilliant props like Opti-Transcripticon (scanner mod) and the amazing steam keyboard mod. Check out I-Wei Huang's brilliant tutorial on How to Draw Steampunk Machines at Crabfu Steamworks. You can also download a free Steampunk Magazine.
