Drawing Website of the Week: Brian Duey
Wednesday December 6, 2006
Browsing through Brian's site, I wasn't too impressed. 'Bikini babe fan art,' I thought. Though the portrait of Morrissey suggested he might actually have some taste. I could see that his drawing was pretty good, nice accurate drawings, smooth tonal work, but not especially exciting ... until I spotted this portrait of Armin Mersmann. Gobsmacked. This is really impressive photorealism: the sort of drawing where the absence of color, and the almost-too-real detail of the drawing, create a heightened reality. Kind of unsettling - in a good way.
Fans of photorealism will enjoy browsing through Brian Duey's site. His work includes graphite and colored pencil, and the gallery aranged by year as well as medium allows you to see how his work has developed.
