Whose drawing do you admire?

Tuesday December 5, 2006
Whose drawing makes you weep with envy, like Julius Caesar before the statue of Alexander? Is there an artist whose talent just bowls you over? Or maybe you're doing pretty well yourself, but have been influenced by some outstanding talents in the past. Perhaps you have been fortunate enough to be taught by or to work with a really outstanding artist. Someone famous? Or who isn't famous, but should be? I'd love to hear about them.

My favorites tend to change over time, but I've always admired Australian artist Imants Tillers. German painter Anselm Kiefer is another favorite, though more for his massive sculptural pieces (which I've been fortunate enough to see at major Australian galleries) than his works on paper. I must admit to being a bit of a sucker for fantasy art. The finest exponents of the genre, like Donato Giancola, have superb draughtsmanship - their drawings often reveal the artist's hand far more than their paintings, which are usually highly finished.
