Introduction to Drawing - Drawing Lessons for Beginners

Friday November 17, 2006
These beginner drawing lessons introduce your materials and explore line, form and structure. Begin with some easy exercises that introduce mark-making. Learn to look at your subject, and to think about structure and perspective so that you can create convincing, three-dimensional drawings. Then continue developing your drawing skills with value drawing.
'Value' or 'tone' - depending on which part of the world you come from - are terms used to describe light and shade. When drawing with light and shade, you need to change the way you look at your subject, and approach the drawing differently. Its almost like 'painting in graphite'. These articles explain this way of looking, and include links to exercises to practice.

Part 1 - Get Started - discover materials and explore line.
Part 2 - Next Steps - explore structure and perspective.
Part 3 - Introducing Value - learn to use light and shade.
