Funding, Pensions and Health Care for Artists
Thursday August 3, 2006
The Los Angeles Times has an article by Dave Carpenter entitled ' Creative financing for struggling artists', which as points out the usual financial struggles of artists, and mentions some of the various philanthropic groups and commercial funding opportunities that exist, as well as some groups which have established pension plans and health-care funds for artists. The latter is a particular concern for artists in the USA, where, as the article reports, health care is usually employment-based. In Australia, public health is still reasonably functional, while private health insurance exists, though few artists can afford it. The UK also has a struggling public health system with a very low percentage of the population taking up private insurance. I spent some time researching Superannuation for Australian readers, and came to the conculsion that its a minefield! Don't put your head in the sand, though: talk to your accountant and get some solid advice on your needs.
