Chris Wahl Illustration Blog
Wednesday June 28, 2006
You know that feeling, just as you are starting to think that maybe you can actually draw, just a little.... then you see an artist's work that makes you want to weep... I got it following a link from Anthony Zierhut's Sketchblog, to the amazing artwork at the Chris Wahl Illustration Blog. Wahl is a fellow Aussie, a commercial artist who lists Radiohead and Bladerunner among his favorite things, (indicating a keen sense of irony and a a dark, elegant, sometimes twisted aesthetic). This guy can draw. Really, really, really draw. (Yes, that was a little sob you heard there.) Click on his gallery link and be prepared to waste an hour. There's everything from wonderful pencil charicatures, Mad magazine covers to comic strip panels and moody graphic-novel illustrations, not to mention a luscious pastel drawing of Michael Hutchence.
The blog also includes some great tutorials on Photoshop. On the main blog page you'll find some video screenshots of Chris drawing, so you can watch how he develops an image. Find out how to create a screen dots for comic-strip or pop art, and some other 'behind the scenes' stuff. Don't miss it.
