The Leipzig Academy

Sunday March 26, 2006
The media has been touting the 'young lions' of contemporary art from the Liepzig Academy and Dresden school, who've recently held sellout shows. One website describes the Leipzig academy as 'the new black'. Christian Schüle writes a lengthy, witty and interesting (if somewhat self-indulgent) analysis of the art of the 'New German Painting'.

I've only seen reproductions of the works, and they seem to be a mixed bag - some realist (though the mainstream media seem to focus on the 'representational' works), some harking back to various Modern movements, and most with the uneasy edge that is de rigeur for contemporary art. But at least, some of them can actually paint. But the hype reminds me of the fuss about David Hockney 'discovering painting'. Hey, we knew where it was all along, if he'd asked....
If you're quick, you can catch Leipzig Academy works at the exhibition 'Life After Death' at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art, which ends on April 2.
