Drawing Blogs and Journals
I wanted my 'sketch a day' to look like blogger Anthony Zierhut's. Anthony writes one of my favorite drawing blogs, and his sketches are a delightful insight into everyday life. Of course, the fact that he is a superb draughtsman probably helps. I'm a very visual person, and living in suburbia, I find there isn't a lot in my surroundings, day to day, that I really want to capture. Its a bit of a visual wasteland.
I also enjoy a blog called Puhiava's Journal, currently featuring some simple color explorations which are quite lovely in themselves, and some really nice pen-and-ink drawings with color wash. Puhiava writes rather self-depreciatingly of his ability but, while they might not be technically perfect, the drawings have a feeling of truthful observation, and are light and fresh in handling.
The daly blog is another artist's blog, with many drawings in a quirky, super-simplified line style. Blogger Donnachada is an animator who has some really interesting things to say about drawing, and the illustration / animation industry.
I'm hoping I might pick up some insights from some of these blog artists that I admire, and see if I can find some source of inspiration that might work to get me really drawing again.
Here's a few sketchbook ideas on various themes - there's five pages, each with a different theme. Of course, drawing doesn't have to be about your environment. I've always been interested in ideas and symbolism, so perhaps I'll find something to explore in my imagination.

That is a bit sad.
I like to do little drawings as well. So I created a little site where people can draw based on a theme each month. I have been noticing that quite a few people also like to do little doodles. Digital Doodle
Hi! Just started an OCA beginners drawing course and so I am looking around and saying hello to other bloggers with drawing blogs! Hope to chat again sometime! Chris
Hi Chris, and welcome to the Drawing/Sketching site. I hope you are enjoying your drawing course!
The sketch a day idea is a good exercise to keep your mind flexible. I try to do something small just to keep the motor skills going.
I was told about ‘boot sketching’ – a quick sketch done while you’re waiting for your computer to start up – and since I do most of my work digitally, it was a good way to keep a practice schedule. Now my machine boots up faster than I can draw, so I turned the boot sketch into a coffee cup sketch – doodling while waiting for the pot to brew.
In the end, a quick sketch a day helps keep that brain active. I highly recommend it.
Thanks for the ideas. We don’t have a blog, but we have added a news page to our website so we can write about interesting things, sites or blogs we find on the web. We love to draw and we have made from this passion our way of living.
I enjoyed reading your blog, you totally knocked it out of the ballpark! I have sent a link to my dad, and will definately be returning back for more.
