15 Year Old Artist Wins Award
Thursday January 6, 2005
An art competition held by the Planetary Society, 'Imagining Titan: Artists Peer Beneath the Veil', has been one by a 15 year old from North Carolina, Chelsea Tyler. Chelsea's description of her creative process reveals that the young artist considered both the scientific facts involved in depicting Saturn's mysterious moon, as well the compositional needs of the image. This resulted in a dyanamic picture, which emerged the winner from a field of over 400 entrants. Read about the competition, and view highly placed paintings and drawings on the Planetary Society website. There are two points that I'd like young readers to take from this: first, if you give thought and effort to your art, it can be as good as anyones, regardless of how young you are. Second, not everybody wins: note the many first-class pictures which won 'first' and 'second' prizes (not the 'grand' prize) in various categories. Art is a matter of taste, so your finest efforts might not always be appreciated. You need to have faith in your own ability.
